According to confirmation from Bangladeshi officials, armed pirates on Tuesday took over a cargo ship flying the flag of their country in the Indian Ocean and kept all 23 crew members captive.
Given that Somalia is where the coast is located, the pirates are thought to be Somalians, according to Mohammed Maksud Alam, director general of Bangladesh’s Department of Shipping, who spoke with Anadolu.
The MV Abdullah was a cargo ship that was transporting coal from the port of Maputo, Mozambique, to the port of Al Hamriyah, UK. The ship is now under the pirates’ authority. He said, “The crew told us they (pirates) have big weaponry.
He then on, “But all of the crew members are safe, and the government is trying to save them and the ship through every avenue available to diplomacy.”
The authority acknowledged that the vessel is owned by SR Shipping Lines from Bangladesh.
A different SR Shipping ship was taken over by pirates in the Arabian Sea earlier in 2010.
