The London High Court has dismissed Prince Harry’s effort to include allegations against Rupert Murdoch and Piers Morgan in his case.
According to Variety, Prince Harry is suing Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (NGN) for illegal news gathering and phone hacking, along with more than forty other claimants.
The plaintiffs sought to add new allegations against Morgan and Murdoch to their original complaint, claiming that Murdoch had been aware of illicit activity at his newspapers since 2004.
NGN vehemently denied these assertions.
According to Variety, a court decided that bringing additional allegations against Murdoch would turn the case into a separate one that could not be part of the ongoing legal dispute.
Permission to incorporate claims made before 1996 and after 2011, which have previously been the subject of previous legal procedures, was also denied to Prince Harry.
Variety reports that the Duke of Sussex attempted to broaden the scope of his case to include pieces from the mid-1990s concerning his mother, Princess Diana, as well as those from 2016 when he started dating Meghan Markle. He claimed that NGN’s The Sun had engaged private investigators to track Meghan down.
Prince Harry’s statements were allowed to be amended by Judge Fancourt to include more people and claims concerning bugging.
According to a spokesman of NGN, “The Claimants attempted to incorporate extensive accusations into their pleadings during a hearing in March 2024. NGN contended that a large number of these had no bearing on the equitable and just adjudication of claims.
The court accepted, refusing to allow the introduction of a large number of the changes.
As of press time, Prince Harry’s representatives had not responded. The trial in this matter is set for January 2025.
