Iran Expels 230,000 Afghans Ahead of July 6 Deadline

From June 1 to June 28, about 233,941 Afghans went back to Afghanistan from Iran, according to Avand Azeez Agha, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

During the week of June 21 to June 28 alone, 131,912 people returned.

From January 1 to June 28, a total of 691,049 Afghans returned from Iran. The IOM says that 70% of them were forced to leave.

Over 230,000 Afghans Returned from Iran in June

Recently, the number of people returning has gone up because Iran gave a deadline — July 6 — for undocumented Afghans to leave. This warning was made in May.

At one point last week, up to 30,000 people were returning every day, according to the IOM.

In the last few days, the number has been around 6,000 to 7,000 daily, say Taliban border officials and the United Nations. But they expect the number to rise again before the July 6 deadline.
