Israel-Backed Balochistan Project Sparks Foreign Interference Fears

ISLAMABAD – A new research project about Balochistan launched by a US-based think tank is raising concerns of foreign involvement in Pakistan’s internal matters.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), based in Washington, announced the Balochistan Studies Project (BSP) on June 12. According to MEMRI, this project will monitor news and developments in Balochistan and the wider region. The group said Balochistan is an important location to watch Iran’s nuclear activities and its ties with Pakistan.

Experts say this move may not be neutral. Dr. Moaswes, writing in Al Jazeera, said this project shows signs of foreign interference in the Baloch separatist movement. He believes the real goal may be to weaken Iran and Pakistan.

MEMRI was started in 1998 by a former Israeli military officer, and many analysts say the group supports pro-Israel views. MEMRI is also known for translating selected content from Arabic, Persian, and Turkish media to influence Western opinions.

The article says this Balochistan project could be part of a wider plan by Israel to build ties with separatist groups in South Asia. These are groups that challenge the governments of Iran and Pakistan.

MEMRI also introduced a man named Mir Yar Baloch as a “special adviser” to the project. He is a political commentator and influencer. In May 2025, he declared Balochistan’s independence on the social media platform X and praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He claimed that “60 million Baloch patriots” support India, especially after the launch of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.

Analysts believe such actions show growing ties between Israel, India, and Baloch separatists. These developments raise concerns about outside powers trying to take advantage of political unrest in the region.
