Israeli Strikes Hit Houthi Sites in Yemen After Missile Attack

TEL AVIV / SANAA — Israeli warplanes struck multiple sites in Yemen over the weekend, escalating more than a year of back-and-forth attacks between Israel and the Houthis movement. The latest strikes come amid rising regional tensions linked to the war in Gaza.

According to the Israeli military, targets included a military compound near Yemen’s presidential palace, two power plants, and a fuel storage site. A spokesperson for the Houthi-run Health Ministry said six people were killed and 86 others wounded.

Israel’s Defense Forces said the action was in retaliation for repeated Houthi missile and drone launches in recent days. “The strikes were conducted in response to repeated attacks by the Houthi terrorist regime against the State of Israel and its civilians,” the military said in a statement.

On Friday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for firing a ballistic missile at Israel, saying it was part of their support for Palestinians in Gaza. An Israeli Air Force official said the missile appeared to carry several sub-munitions designed to detonate on impact. “This is the first time that this kind of missile has been launched from Yemen,” the official noted.

The Houthis, who control much of Yemen’s population, have intensified attacks since Israel’s war with Hamas began in October 2023. They have targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea and launched missiles toward Israel, most of which have been intercepted. Israel has responded with repeated airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the strategic port city of Hodeidah.

Senior Houthi figure Abdul Qader al-Murtada vowed the group would continue its campaign. “Israel must know that we will not abandon our brothers in Gaza, whatever the sacrifices,” he wrote on X.
