Israeli ministers call to annex the West Bank after the UK, Canada, and Australia recognise the Palestinian state
Two senior Israeli ministers on Monday urged immediate steps to extend Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank in response to Britain, Canada, and Australia formally recognising a Palestinian state.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir — using the Israeli term for the territory, “Judea and Samaria” — said the recognition “requires immediate countermeasures,” calling for “the swift application of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria and the complete dismantling of the Palestinian Authority.” He added he planned to submit a proposal to apply sovereignty at the next cabinet meeting.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a long-time proponent of annexation, issued a similar demand on X, saying the days when “Britain and other countries would determine our future are over.” He described the British, Canadian, and Australian recognitions as an “anti-Israeli move,” and said the only proper response was sovereignty over what he called the Jewish people’s historic homeland in Judea and Samaria. “Mr prime Minister, the time is now, and it is in your hands,” Smotrich wrote.
