Israeli Airstrikes Kill 29 in Gaza Hit Khan Yunis and Al-Shati Camps

According to Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defence, two Israeli airstrikes hit crowded areas in Gaza just after midnight on Wednesday. The first bomb hit a tent where displaced people were staying in Khan Yunis (southern Gaza), and the second one hit a camp in northern Gaza.

When asked about the strikes, the Israeli military said they were checking the reports.

These airstrikes happened while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington, meeting with former US President Donald Trump. Netanyahu said Israel still aims to bring back hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack and to destroy Hamas’ military and government power.

Gaza’s civil defence said that on Tuesday alone, 29 people died in Israeli attacks across the region. Many of the victims were people who had already lost their homes during the 21-month-long conflict.

Bassal said 10 members of the same family died in the first strike in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Yunis. The second strike hit Al-Shati camp near Gaza City, injuring over 30 people and killing others from another family.

One man who saw the Al-Shati bombing, Zuhair Judeh, said, “The explosion felt like an earthquake. It destroyed the house and others nearby. The bodies were scattered everywhere. It was a terrible massacre.”

Some people are still missing, possibly trapped under the rubble.

Another witness, Abeer al-Sharbasi, said the strike was “terrifying.” She and her family were sleeping in a nearby tent when the bomb hit. “You never know when or why they will bomb. All we can do is pray,” she said.

Because of strict media controls and the danger in Gaza, reporters cannot confirm the details independently.

So far, Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 57,575 people in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The United Nations says these numbers are reliable.
