Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Brother Sister’ Wins Top Prize at Venice Film Festival

Venice — In a surprising turn at the 10-day Venice Film Festival, American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch took home the coveted Golden Lion for his quietly humorous relationship triptych, Father Mother Brother Sister, starring Adam Driver, Vicky Krieps, and Cate Blanchett. The award capped a festival that showcased a slate of powerful and diverse films.

“All of us here who make films are not motivated by competition, but I truly appreciate this unexpected honour,” Jarmusch said, reflecting on the win. “I’m learning each time.”

Jarmusch’s victory came as a surprise over other festival favorites, including the emotionally gripping Gaza war docudrama The Voice of Hind Rajab, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s wrestling biopic The Smashing Machine, and Park Chan-wook’s darkly satirical South Korean thriller No Other Choice.

The runner-up, earning the Silver Lion, was Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania for The Voice of Hind Rajab. The film, which dramatizes the harrowing story of five-year-old Hind Rajab Hamada trapped in a car with her deceased relatives during a 2024 Gaza conflict, received a record 23-minute standing ovation after its screening.

Meanwhile, Benny Safdie, director of The Smashing Machine, was honored with the Best Director award for his work on the sports biopic.

The festival, which concluded on Saturday, highlighted both deeply moving real-life stories and inventive fiction, leaving audiences and critics buzzing over its unexpected outcomes.
