Toronto — Pop Culture Icon John Candy Celebrated in New Documentary at TIFF

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) opened this year with a heartfelt tribute to Canadian comedy legend John Candy, renowned for his work on Second City Television and Hollywood hits like Splash, Stripes, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

The festival arrives at a time when tensions with the United States, including President Donald Trump’s tariffs and comments about Canada, have sparked a surge in national pride, with many Canadians supporting local films, businesses, and culture.

“In Canada, our sovereignty and identity have faced challenges. When Canadians heard those threats, they channeled their inner John Candy—stood up, elbows ready, and wrote our own lines,” said director Colin Hanks before the premiere. “Don’t push a Canadian too far,” he joked, earning cheers from the audience as he reminisced about Candy’s memorable characters, including his first political inspiration—the mayor of Melonville on SCTV.

Produced by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and directed by Hanks, the documentary showcases Candy’s timeless performances through archival footage and personal testimonials from family, friends, and co-stars. Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy reflect on their collaborations with Candy, while Bill Murray, Macaulay Culkin, and Tom Hanks also share their memories of the late actor.

The film doesn’t shy away from the challenges Candy faced, including fatphobia and anxiety, which shadowed his career and personal life. Candy, originally from Newmarket, Ontario, died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43.

Hanks reflected on Candy’s enduring appeal, saying, “The very struggles he faced were struggles we all relate to. That sense of him being the everyman—it couldn’t have been more accurate.” Reynolds, wearing a Canada T-shirt and a blazer embroidered with Candy’s hometown coordinates, joined Hanks at the premiere.

The documentary is set to stream on Prime Video this October, giving fans a chance to celebrate Candy’s life, legacy, and timeless humor.
