John Cena Accused of Refusing to Lose to Multiple Opponents During WWE Career
As John Cena nears the final chapter of his in-ring career, some former colleagues have shared stories that have raised eyebrows about his in-ring decisions and long-standing “baby-face” image.
In a recent interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, former WWE star Jack Swagger claimed that Cena refused to lose to him during his time in the company.
“Oh yeah, he absolutely refused to do it. I was told that was what happened,” Swagger revealed.
Swagger later cashed in his Money in the Bank contract against Cena on WWE Raw, eventually defeating Chris Jericho to capture the World Heavyweight Championship. Reflecting on the moment, Swagger said, “The original plan was for me to beat him on Monday Night Raw and not do the tease. But I’m a young guy. I’ve been there for a cup of coffee, so what are you going to do?”
He added, “I’m not the only guy he’s done that to. He did that throughout his career.”
Reports also indicate Cena held the same stance against members of Nexus at the 2010 SummerSlam. Joey Mercury and Justin Gabriel’s former teammate, David Otunga, has also recalled that Cena resisted certain match plans, prompting other stars to step in.
“Edge and Jericho were the ones that put the whole match together, made it make sense, and it was good,” said Heath Slater in an interview with Inside the Ropes. “Then Cena didn’t like it, is the story I’ve heard. He wanted to change it. Edge and Chris went to bat for us—they were all for it. Then it got switched to Jericho and Edge.”
While Cena remains a celebrated figure in WWE history, these accounts offer a glimpse into some of the behind-the-scenes challenges during his storied career.
