Justice Jahangiri Faces Supreme Court Amid Degree Row

Justice Jahangiri Appears at Supreme Court Amid Degree Controversy

ISLAMABAD — Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri entered the Supreme Court premises on Thursday through the litigants’ gate, using his pass card. He was accompanied by fellow judges, including Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Babar Sattar. Justice Saman Rafat and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq were also present inside the court building, signaling heightened judicial activity over the matter.

The development comes just days after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred Justice Jahangiri from performing judicial duties. On September 16, a division bench led by Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan issued the restraining order while hearing a petition challenging his appointment. The court ruled that he would remain barred until the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) delivers its decision.

The controversy first surfaced in July when a letter, purportedly from the Karachi University (KU) controller of examinations, circulated online, questioning Justice Jahangiri’s law degree. The matter escalated when KU’s syndicate formally cancelled his degree and enrolment — initially issued in 1991 under enrolment number 5968.

The decision came hours after police detained academic and syndicate member Dr. Riaz Ahmed, reportedly to prevent him from attending the key meeting. He was released later in the evening after the syndicate finalized its decision to revoke the degree.
