K-Electric Faces Court-Ordered Probe Over Karachi Power Outages

Court Orders Check on K-Electric Over Long Power Cuts in Karachi

KARACHI – A court has ordered a full check of K-Electric’s system after many people complained about long and unannounced power cuts across the city.

This happened during a hearing on a petition filed against the electricity company. K-Electric told the court that 70% of Karachi is not facing load-shedding. They said power theft and technical issues are causing problems in some areas.

K-Electric also said it has invested over $4 billion since becoming a private company. The company claimed this helped reduce losses by 50% and grow the number of users.

But the court raised serious concerns about power cuts in areas where people pay their bills regularly. Justice Faisal Kamal Alam asked if K-Electric’s upgrades are actually working and how well NEPRA is monitoring the company.

NEPRA’s legal team said they had fined K-Electric Rs. 20 million, but the judge called the fine too small to make a real difference.

K-Electric responded by saying it is ready to work with NEPRA’s technical team. A company spokesperson said, “KE has received the court’s order and will be available for any technical surveys.”

K-Electric also promised that soon 90% to 95% of its network will be free from load-shedding.

The next court hearing is on August 12, when NEPRA will present its findings.

This issue has become more serious because of the rising heat and long power outages—some areas suffer up to 18 hours without electricity each day.

The court’s order is seen as an important step toward finding real solutions for Karachi’s electricity problems.
