Karachi Sees Drop in Crime, Police Step Up Operations
KARACHI — Crime in Karachi has seen a notable decline, with police reporting a 30% drop in murder cases, a 16% reduction in street crimes, a 20% fall in robberies, and a 9% decrease in vehicle thefts.
According to the Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police, operations across the city have been highly effective. Police arrested 2,452 suspects and rescued 62 abducted individuals safely. During encounters with criminals, 611 were arrested, 94 were killed, and 626 sustained injuries.
The Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) also carried out major crackdowns, arresting 62 gangs involved in car thefts and recovering 23 stolen vehicles.
AIG Odho attributed the decline in crime to strengthened policing, timely intelligence, and sustained operations against organized gangs. He emphasized that Karachi Police remain committed to further reducing street crimes and protecting citizens through stricter enforcement in the coming months.
Crime Statistics Highlight Challenges
The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) recently released the city’s crime report for July 2025. The report revealed that 22 vehicles were snatched, 197 were stolen, and a total of 502 motorcycles were forcibly taken, while 3,357 were reported stolen.
Street criminals also snatched 1,603 mobile phones in July alone. The report noted one kidnapping-for-ransom case and five extortion incidents, while gunfire-related incidents claimed 52 lives.
Looking at the first three months of 2024, the CPLC report recorded 22,627 crimes. During this period, 59 people lost their lives resisting robberies, and over 700 were injured. Additionally, 373 cars, 15,968 motorcycles, and 6,102 mobile phones were stolen or snatched. Extortion and kidnapping for ransom cases numbered 25 and five, respectively.
The reports underline the ongoing challenges in maintaining law and order, even as focused policing efforts have shown tangible results in curbing crime in the city.
