July Crime Report: Alarming Surge in Street Crimes Across Karachi

KARACHI – The latest report by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) paints a grim picture of law and order in Karachi, as street crime continues to spiral out of control.

According to July data, 22 cars were snatched and 197 were stolen from different areas of the city. Meanwhile, 502 motorcycles were taken forcibly, and a staggering 3,357 bikes were reported stolen.

Street criminals also made off with 1,603 mobile phones from unsuspecting citizens during the same period.

The report didn’t just highlight property crime — it also shed light on more serious offenses. One case of kidnapping for ransom and five extortion cases were registered last month. Tragically, 52 people lost their lives in gun-related incidents in July alone.

Snapshot of 2024’s First Quarter
The CPLC’s earlier report covering January to March 2024 revealed a similarly troubling trend. During those 91 days:

22,627 crimes were recorded across the city.

59 people were killed while resisting robberies.

Over 700 others were injured in such encounters.

373 cars, 15,968 motorbikes, and 6,102 mobile phones were either snatched or stolen.

The report also documented 25 extortion cases and five kidnappings for ransom during the first quarter of the year.

So far, 154 people have lost their lives in street crimes in 2024 — a figure that continues to rise as residents call for stronger action from law enforcement agencies.
