Flights and Power Woes Hit Karachi After Heavy Rains

Karachi — Travel plans and daily life in Karachi were severely disrupted on Wednesday as heavy rains continued to affect the city. According to sources at Jinnah International Airport, at least 12 flights were delayed.

An Iraqi Airways flight to Najaf finally took off at 6:00 am, an hour behind schedule, while an Airblue flight to Jeddah (PK-170) was delayed by nearly seven hours, departing at 10:00 am. Other international flights, including Qatar Airways 605 to Doha, Flydubai 332 to Dubai, and Etihad Airways 297 to Abu Dhabi, faced delays of about an hour each.

Domestic travel was also impacted. PIA flight 455 to Skardu was delayed by an hour, Serene Air’s flight 520 to Lahore departed 30 minutes late, and PIA’s flight 300 to Islamabad left 20 minutes behind schedule. AirSial’s flight 121 to Islamabad, scheduled for 7:00 am, had not yet departed at the time of reporting, and PIA’s flight 302 to Lahore, scheduled for 8:00 am, was still awaiting departure. Meanwhile, PIA’s flight 503 to Gwadar was cancelled. Saudi Airlines flight 701 to Jeddah eventually departed at 10:10 am, about an hour late.

The travel disruptions come as Karachi continues to battle widespread power outages following two days of heavy rainfall. Officials report that 98 K-Electric feeders remain non-functional, leaving large parts of the city without electricity. Underground cables and substations were flooded, affecting the power supply across multiple neighborhoods.

Areas hit include Surjani Town, Yousuf Goth, Moinabad, Scheme 33, Baldia, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Bin Qasim, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Manghopir, and Razzaqabad. Residents in Ramswami, the Old City, Urdu Bazaar, and along M.A. Jinnah Road have been without electricity for more than 48 hours.

The prolonged outages have also disrupted water supply in many homes, further compounding the difficulties faced by Karachi residents.
