PMD Issues Urban Flooding Alert for Karachi, Heavy Rains Forecast Across Pakistan

Karachi – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that Karachi may experience urban flooding between August 30 and September 2 as heavy rains are expected to lash the city.

According to the forecast, thunderstorms with rain are predicted in Islamabad from August 29 to September 2, while northern and north-eastern Punjab districts could witness heavy rainfall on August 30 and 31. Cities likely to be affected include Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, and Mandi Bahauddin.

The alert comes after last week’s torrential rains devastated Karachi, leaving large parts of the metropolis submerged. Boats had to be deployed for rescue operations in low-lying areas.

Tragically, 15 people lost their lives due to rain-related incidents, while hundreds of families were displaced and livelihoods destroyed. With over 200 millimetres of rainfall recorded, Karachi’s infrastructure was severely damaged, roads were ruined, and floodwater mixed with sewage continues to stagnate in several neighbourhoods even a week later.

Residents have also been enduring long hours of power outages, adding to their misery.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautionary measures to minimize risks during the upcoming spell of heavy rain.
