Karachi Residents Face Flooding, Governor Assures Swift Action
Karachi – Residents of Karachi reported widespread problems following heavy rainfall, including blocked drains, power outages, and damage to homes and businesses caused by stagnant water.
Acting on the complaints, the Sindh Governor directed authorities to take immediate action. Reports were promptly forwarded to relevant departments, including Deputy Commissioners, the Water Board, K-Electric, and other concerned agencies.
“The people are not alone in this difficult time. The doors of the Governor’s House are always open to address their problems,” the Governor said. He also urged citizens to report emergencies directly via the Governor’s House helpline at 1366.
In a related update, Mayor Murtaza Wahab said Karachi experienced devastating rainfall on Monday, with record downpours recorded across the city. Speaking at a press conference, Wahab noted that the destruction was not limited to Karachi but also affected districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and Punjab.
He emphasized that Pakistan faces a choice in the era of climate change: adapt to the challenges or remain critical without action.
According to Wahab, the first spell of rain ended around 12:30 pm, followed by a second spell starting at 1:30 pm, which continued for five hours until 6 pm. Rainfall gradually eased by 6 pm and had mostly stopped across the city by 8 pm.
Manghopir received the heaviest rainfall at 235 mm, followed by Gulshan-e-Hadeed at 202 mm, and Karachi Airport at 200 mm. Overall, the city recorded between 175–235 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours. Wahab explained that Karachi’s storm drainage system can handle only up to 40 mm, meaning any excess inevitably leads to flooding. The most significant overflows were reported along three points of Shahrah-e-Faisal.
