DIG Traffic Issues Strict Safety Directives Amid Karachi’s Rising Road Fatalities

KARACHI — In a bid to curb the alarming rise in road accidents, DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah has issued final instructions to mills, factories, industries, and other organizations, making it mandatory for employees to strictly follow traffic safety rules.

According to the directives, every motorcycle must meet prescribed safety and traffic standards, be equipped with a legal number plate, and riders must wear helmets while carrying a valid driving license. Vehicles are also required to have properly working headlights, tail lights, indicators, chain covers, and side mirrors.

The DIG emphasized that these regulations must be enforced without exception and directed organizations to ensure compliance among their workers. He further instructed Station Officers (SOs) and Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to carry out field inspections and report back on enforcement progress.

Rising Toll of Road Accidents in Karachi

The directives come as Karachi grapples with a surge in deadly traffic accidents. Official rescue data shows that at least 546 people lost their lives in road mishaps across the city during the first seven months of 2025. Another 8,136 citizens were injured, with heavy vehicles responsible for a significant portion of the fatalities.

Among these, trailers caused 62 deaths, water tankers 37, dumpers 32, and buses 20. The overall death toll includes 425 men, 51 women, 51 boys, and 19 girls.

Tragedy Sparks Public Anger

One of the most shocking incidents occurred on Rashid Minhas Road, where a speeding dumper ran over a motorcycle, killing 22-year-old Mahnoor and her 14-year-old brother, Ahmed Raza, while leaving their father critically injured. The tragic accident triggered public outrage, with enraged residents setting seven dumpers ablaze in protest.

Authorities have stressed the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved safety measures to prevent further loss of life on Karachi’s roads.
