KCCI Protests Harsh FBR Tax Powers in Karachi

A criminal case has been started under Sections 37A and 37B of the Sales Tax Act, 1990. The case is about tax fraud and using fake sales tax invoices to wrongly claim refunds.

Javed Balwani, the President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), criticized the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). He said the FBR now has too much power, which is harmful and unfair. He called the new rules harsh and bad for Pakistan’s business image.

He said these rules will damage Pakistan’s reputation as a good place for business.

Karachi Businessmen Protest New Tax Rules

The KCCI has started a big protest in Karachi. They have put up banners in many places to show that traders are against these new tax laws.

Balwani also warned that giving FBR officers the power to arrest people without proper checks could lead to harassment of businesspeople.

He said, “These powers might be misused for personal benefit. This will disturb business, stop new investment, and hurt business growth.”

The KCCI asked the federal government to keep the tax officers accountable and to make policies that help, not hurt, businesses.
