A letter from the Speaker’s office says: “I have nothing to do with the salary increase and I’m not interested in it.” The letter also says that only the federal cabinet and the prime minister can decide on raising salaries. “Don’t raise my salary, I don’t want it,” it adds.
Although the letter doesn’t directly mention Khawaja Asif’s words, it says that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will make the final decision.
In June, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had spoken out against raising the salaries and benefits of the National Assembly Speaker and the Senate Chairman. He said such a raise is a waste of money.

He also said the salary and perks increase for the Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairman are unnecessary and too much.
Khawaja Asif stressed that the government should think about the struggles of ordinary people. He said the nation’s respect depends on the well-being of its people.
Earlier, the federal government had approved a huge 500% salary increase for the Speaker and Chairman.
