Landhi Jail Officers Suspended Over Harassment and Bribery
Three officers from Landhi Jail have been suspended after serious complaints of harassment and bribery. The suspended officers are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Azizullah, Constable Abbas Abro, and Constable Ali Sher Soomro.
This action was taken after a woman named Ramsha Tariq filed a complaint with the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court. She said that ASI Azizullah forced her to agree to inappropriate demands. He allegedly threatened her father, who is a prisoner, if she did not agree.
Ramsha also said that Constables Abbas Abro and Ali Sher Soomro asked her for bribes of PKR 3,000 to 5,000 to allow visits to her father.
Sindh’s Minister for Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari, responded quickly by suspending the officers. He also ordered a full investigation by the DIG Karachi Region. Zardari promised that any officers found guilty would face strict punishment. He said the government will not tolerate any corruption in the prison system and will make jail visits safer and more transparent.
This case has caused public outrage and has increased calls for reform in Pakistan’s jails. It is also the third corruption case in Karachi’s prisons in recent months.
In a similar case earlier, a Station House Officer (SHO) from Shah Latif police station was also suspended after a recording surfaced. The SHO was allegedly heard demanding a bribe from members of the gutka mafia. Karachi’s top police officer, Javed Alam Odho, took quick action and removed the SHO from duty.
Authorities say they will take strong legal action if the new harassment and bribery claims are proven true.
