In the third "Downton Abbey" movie, the Crawley family returns to their renowned mansion

The third Downton Abbey film will bring back both familiar and new faces as the fictional Crawley family and their servants running a vast English rural estate in the early 20th century. After the critically acclaimed franchise debuted as a television series in 2010, it quickly amassed a large audience in both the United States and Britain. Two films that were released in 2019 and 2022 followed the six-season television series.

The third installment in the Downton Abbey series was written by series creator Julian Fellowes, according to a statement released on Monday by Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and Carnival Films. Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, who play patriarch Robert Crawley and his wife Cora, respectively, were among the original cast members who would be returning for the new film.

The release also stated that Joely Richardson, who was most recently seen in the Netflix series The Gentlemen, and Holdovers star Paul Giamatti, who is nominated for an Oscar, had joined the cast. The former will play Cora’s brother Harold Levinson. The role was portrayed by Giamatti in a Christmas special.

Dominic West, star of The Crown, will play Guy Dexter again in the upcoming film. Guy Dexter was an actor in the 2022 film Downton Abbey: A New Era. After directing the second film, Simon Curtis is set to return to the director’s chair. In Downton Abbey: A New Era, which is set in 1928, a film team visits Downton and several family members visit the French Riviera.

The film opens with Maggie Smith, who plays Crawley’s mother Lady Violet, shocking her family by telling them she has inherited a south of France home from a man she knew decades before.

The family leaves to see the property, led by Crawley. The staff at Downton Abbey are delighted when a film crew arrives at the same time. Playing Lady Mary on a movie set was a wonderful experience, if at times a little confusing, according to Michelle Dockery.

We’ve been running really well. Our luck has definitely been with us. When asked if another movie would come after, writer Julian Fellowes responded in 2022, “We’ve kicked off a lot of careers of young players.” “It may be risky to say this, but I believe that the majority of those who have worked on it have had a pleasant experience, and that is sufficient in my opinion. However, we’ll see. Really, I don’t think you can ever tell.”
