Macron: Recognising Palestinian State Key to Isolating Hamas

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that recognising a Palestinian state is the most effective way to weaken Hamas and support a long-term peace settlement.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 12, Macron stressed that such recognition would affirm the Palestinian people’s right to statehood, independent of Hamas. “Recognition of a Palestinian state is the best way to isolate Hamas,” he said.

France and Britain are among several Western nations preparing to formally recognise a Palestinian state during the ongoing United Nations General Assembly. The move is aimed at reviving the two-state solution to the decades-old Arab-Israeli conflict — a plan strongly opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Warning that time is running out, Macron said Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank risks making a two-state solution “totally impossible.”

Meanwhile, Israeli forces intensified their offensive in Gaza on Thursday, launching heavy air and ground attacks on Gaza City. According to Gaza’s health ministry, at least 65,141 people — mostly civilians — have been killed since the campaign began, figures the United Nations considers credible.

Calling the military operation “counterproductive,” Macron argued it has damaged Israel’s global standing. “You are destroying the image and credibility of Israel, not just in the region, but in public opinion everywhere,” he warned.
