Zohran Mamdani Wins Primary, Will Face Eric Adams in NYC Mayor Race
The results of ranked-choice voting were announced on Tuesday. Zohran Mamdani, who was not well-known when he started, won 56% of the vote in the third round. A candidate needs over 50% to win.
Now, as the Democratic nominee, Mamdani will go against the current mayor, Eric Adams, in the main election. Adams first won as a Democrat in 2021, but now he’s running as an independent after he was accused of corruption. The case was later dropped by the Department of Justice.
In a new video on social media, Mamdani compared his win to Adams’ campaign in 2021. He said, “We always thought we would win in later rounds of voting. But when we got more votes in the first round than Adams got in all seven rounds of the last election, it was shocking.”
Mamdani is a 33-year-old Muslim born in Uganda. He calls himself a democratic socialist. His surprising win over Andrew Cuomo, a more traditional and moderate politician, made some Democrats nervous. They worry his views could give Republicans something to attack.
The day after Mamdani’s win, former President Donald Trump called him a “100% Communist Lunatic.” Republicans also said they will connect Mamdani to other Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections.
Mamdani said in his video that he wants to bring people back to the Democratic Party. He also pointed out that he won in some areas of New York City that had voted for Trump in the last presidential election.

After the election board confirmed Mamdani’s win, Trump was asked what he would do if Mamdani tried to stop immigration arrests. Trump replied, “Then we’ll have to arrest him. We don’t need a communist in this country. But if we have one, I’ll be watching him closely for the good of the nation.”
Mamdani has said that immigration raids are frightening people and that the agents don’t care about the law.
Cuomo, who got 44% of the final vote, called Mamdani last Tuesday to admit he lost. Cuomo might still run as an independent, but he hasn’t announced anything yet.
In the general election, Mamdani will face:
Eric Adams (independent)
Curtis Sliwa (Republican and radio host, founder of Guardian Angels)
Jim Walden (independent and lawyer)
New York City uses ranked-choice voting, a system started in 2021. In this system, voters can choose up to five candidates in order of preference. The counting happens in rounds. Candidates with the fewest votes are removed, and their votes go to others until someone gets more than 50%.
