Aguerd Header Secures Marseille’s First Home Win Over PSG Since 2011
Marseille finally ended a long wait for a home league victory against Paris Saint-Germain as Nayef Aguerd’s early header proved decisive at the Stade Vélodrome. The win marked their first home triumph over their fierce rivals in 12 years.
PSG, the reigning champions, secured their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title last season, extending their record to 13 overall, while Marseille finished as runners-up.
“It’s one of the best days since I arrived,” said Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi. “I came here for the Velodrome and to beat PSG, a team that represents power and has dominated for years—a philosophy I cannot accept.”
However, De Zerbi stressed the team must keep moving forward. “But we haven’t done anything yet. The most important thing is Friday in Strasbourg, to take another step toward building a great team,” he added.
The match saw drama off the pitch as well, with De Zerbi sent off in stoppage time just before Marseille secured the win.
With the victory, Marseille climbed to sixth place with nine points, three behind PSG, who are currently behind league leaders Monaco on goals scored.
