Maryam Nawaz Orders Overhaul of Rescue Boats Amid Lahore Floods
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has called for immediate improvements to the province’s rescue boats after an inspection revealed several shortcomings.
During the review, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of equipping rescue boats with reliable wireless communication systems, warning that reliance on mobile networks during emergencies is insufficient. She instructed authorities to install proper wireless systems on all boats without delay.
The CM also stressed that emergency lights must be available on every vessel to ensure safe night operations. In addition, she ordered that each boat be stocked with loudspeakers, first aid kits, and dry rations to improve rescue efficiency.
Highlighting maintenance issues, Maryam Nawaz pointed out that many boat engines require urgent overhauls. “Weak motors are preventing boats from moving upstream, which is slowing down rescue operations,” she noted. She directed that all boat motors be upgraded as a priority to enhance performance.
“Practical field experience cannot be replaced by office briefings. It is necessary to review matters through the eyes of the chief executive,” the CM remarked.
The call for action comes as floodwaters from the Ravi River have inundated several Lahore neighborhoods, including Badru Pind, Talluq Pura, Mehna Wal, Chuhng, and Theme Park. Displaced residents have taken refuge on the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway, bringing their families and belongings with them. Water from the Ravi has spread across most residential areas along the motorway, starting from Thokar Niaz Baig.
