Mets Rally Past Phillies with Vientos and Torrens Leading the Way

The New York Mets overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, thanks to standout performances from Mark Vientos and Luis Torrens.

Vientos, who has been red-hot recently, broke a 3-3 tie with his first of two RBI doubles and then sparked a three-run fourth inning with another RBI double, helping the Mets secure their sixth win in nine games after a rough 1-10 stretch earlier this month. Over his past eight games, Vientos is 12-for-31 (.387).

Torrens had a career-defining night, driving in five runs—his first five-RBI game since August 2021. He opened the scoring in the sixth with an RBI double, then crushed a three-run homer off Jordan Romano in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-3. Torrens capped his night with a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Jeff McNeil contributed three RBIs with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly as the Mets racked up 14 hits, going 11-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Tyrone Taylor added three hits of his own.

The Phillies had a strong start, with Trea Turner opening the scoring with a triple and Alec Bohm hitting a two-run single in the third. But after Bohm grounded into a fifth-inning double play against reliever Jose Castillo, a brief delay ensued when he complained about a glare from a television microphone. Castillo soon retired Brandon Marsh, and the Mets then took the lead for good.

Starter Kodai Senga gave up three runs on six hits in four-plus innings, while five relievers combined to throw five scoreless frames. Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez struggled, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, marking his shortest outing since May 24.

With the win, the Mets moved within six games of the division-leading Phillies, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
