The makers of the popular video game Minecraft, Mojang Studios, and Netflix have teamed up to create a new animated series based on the game. The announcement was made in conjunction with the 15th anniversary celebration of Minecraft and includes a teaser clip.
“Carmen Sandiego” and “Sonic Prime” animation studio WildBrain Studios will produce the series, which will have a unique storyline and fresh characters. A release date has not yet been declared.
With more than 300 million copies sold globally, Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time. There has already been an animated Minecraft series on Netflix. The interactive series “Minecraft: Story Mode,” which Netflix and Telltale Games were working on together in 2018, was eventually shelved.
The trend of video game adaptations finding their way to large screens and streaming services is something that this new Minecraft series is a part of. The Last of Us and Super Mario Bros. adaptations are two recent, successful examples.
