Army to Help During Muharram for Safety

The Ministry of Interior has announced that the army will help local governments during the holy month of Muharram. This decision was made after requests from all provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad.

The army will only step in when needed, based on the situation in each area.

Section 144 in Punjab

The Punjab government has already put Section 144 in place across the province from June 27 to July 6, 2025. This is because of security concerns during Muharram.

This step is taken to:

Keep people safe.

Maintain peace between religious groups.

Stop any possible trouble during Muharram events.

Pillion riding (two people on one motorcycle) has also been banned during this time in Punjab.

Rules for Muharram Gatherings

Only already-approved processions and majalis (gatherings) will be allowed.

No new events or changes to existing ones are allowed without official permission.

Carrying weapons or flammable items in public is not allowed.

People must not raise provocative slogans or gestures, or say or write anything (even online) that could cause hatred between religious groups.

Why Muharram is Important

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is very important in Islam.

The 1st of Muharram is known as Youm-e-Umar, remembering the martyrdom of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second Caliph of Islam.

The 10th of Muharram, called Ashura, is observed in memory of Hazrat Imam Hussein ibn Ali (RA), his family, and companions who were martyred in the Battle of Karbala.
