Flood Breach Damages M-5 Motorway, Traffic Suspended
MULTAN — A breach has developed in the eastern section of the M-5 Motorway, sweeping away a portion of the road, according to the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Multan. Earlier, strong flood currents had already damaged the western side of the same stretch.
Motorway Police and National Highway Authority (NHA) teams are on-site with heavy machinery, working to contain the damage. Officials said stones are being placed in the breach to reduce the flow of water, as floodwaters from the Sutlej River continue to rush toward the Chenab.
Authorities have closed the M-5 Motorway from Multan to Jhangra for all traffic. The NHA and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that the motorway had already been shut down at Jalalpur Pirwala due to severe erosion risks.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said the PDMA Punjab, NHA, and other departments are jointly working to protect the motorway. Efforts include reinforcing weak points with sandbags and stone pitching to prevent further erosion.
