NA to Decide on Sheikh Waqas Akram’s Seat Today
ISLAMABAD — The National Assembly will meet today at 11 a.m., with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq presiding, to take up a 16-point agenda that includes a motion to declare Sheikh Waqas Akram’s seat vacant.
The motion, to be moved by government lawmaker Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, will formally end Akram’s membership if approved by the House.
Speaker Sadiq had earlier noted that Akram missed 40 consecutive sittings without sanctioned leave — a violation that, under parliamentary rules, could lead to his seat being vacated.
However, PTI MNA Malik Aamir Dogar accused the government of targeting opposition lawmakers, claiming there was no precedent for removing a member solely over leave-related technicalities. He insisted that Akram had already submitted leave applications to the Speaker’s office.
Today’s session will also take up key legislation, including the Easy Business Bill 2025, the National School of Public Policy Bill 2025, the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Petroleum (Amendment) Bill 2025.
Lawmakers are also expected to raise attention notices over the government’s silence on recent remarks by the U.S. President regarding oil reserves, as well as overcharging by private hospitals and laboratories in Islamabad.
