NEPRA May Cut Power Prices After Fuel Cost Drop

NEPRA May Cut Power Prices After Fuel Cost Drop

Electricity Prices May Drop After NEPRA Hearing

Electricity prices in Pakistan may soon become cheaper, as NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) will hold a hearing tomorrow on a proposal to reduce rates.

This possible price cut is due to lower fuel costs in June. A request from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) shows that the average cost to make electricity in June was Rs 7.68 per unit, while the set reference price was higher at Rs 8.33 per unit.

Because of this difference, the CPPA is asking NEPRA to reduce electricity prices for consumers.

One big reason for the drop in cost is the increased use of hydropower. In June, 39% of the electricity came from water sources. Also, 20% of power came from coal (local and imported), and 16% from imported RLNG (gas).

If NEPRA agrees, the new prices will bring relief to millions of Pakistanis already facing high living costs. The final decision will be made after tomorrow’s public hearing.

Earlier Price Reductions Already Announced

NEPRA has already approved a small cut in electricity prices under the monthly fuel adjustment. K-Electric (KE) users will see a decrease of Rs 4.03 per unit in their July bills. In other parts of the country, the price will go down by 5 paisas per unit.

These reductions are based on fuel cost adjustments from April and May 2025.
