The AI production startup Fable Studios has released Showrunner, an app that lets users create and watch animated series produced by AI, in alpha. Through user prompts, viewers can choose characters, stories, and shot types to create their own episodes using the app.
The first two episodes of the animated series “Exit Valley,” which is a tech-industry satire with a style similar of “South Park” and “Rick and Morty,” have been released. In the first episode, Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, and the Winklevoss twins’ Gold Rush-era ancestors are shown fighting over a valuable item, parodying the competitive spirit behind Facebook’s founding. 22 episodes will be produced by Fable Studios for the first season of “Exit Valley.”
Users can select from a range of genres offered by Showrunner, such as anime-style shows like “What We Leave Behind” and “Ikiru Shinu” and Pixar-like animation in the series “Pixels.” With prompts of 10–15 words, the app can create scenes that range in length from 2 to 16 minutes. To add personality to their episodes, users can also alter the voices, shots, and scripts.
In the past, Fable Studios tested Showrunner on “South Park,” creating AI-generated episodes that were seen about 8 million times on X, formerly known as Twitter. Fable Studios made it clear that these episodes were intended primarily for research and that the platform will not fund the production of new episodes that make use of pre-existing intellectual property.
The goal of Showrunner is to make TV show creation more accessible to a wider audience by catering to non-professional users. Hollywood studios and filmmakers have expressed interest in the app because they see potential for using it to create original content.
The CEO of Fable Studios, Edward Saatchi, sees a day when viewers will be able to make and watch customized episodes whenever they want. He thinks that artificial intelligence will make entertainment more engaging and interactive.
Head of Technology at Fable Studios and co-creator of Showrunner, Jacob Madden, emphasized the platform’s ability to spark imagination and facilitate storytelling experimentation in real time. Madden was excited about the creative opportunities Showrunner offers for television in the future.
To redefine the audience-entertainment interaction, Fable Studios expects substantial changes in the entertainment business in the next five years.
