A 70-year-old man is detained by police in Swat for marrying a young girl

A 70-year-old man was taken into custody by police on Monday in the Swat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for marrying a young girl.

Reports state that the 13-year-old girl’s father married the man. The nikahkhuwan, the girl’s father, and the witnesses to the marriage ceremony were all taken into custody by the police.

After being saved, the girl was placed in protective custody and brought to a nearby hospital for examinations and tests.

According to Station House Officer (SHO) Roshan Ali, “compliance with legal requirements” has led to the apprehending of the incident’s parties, and the investigation is currently proceeding.

According to the police, legal action would be taken as appropriate.

The Marriage Restraint Act of 1929, which is now in effect in Pakistan, establishes the minimum age of marriage at 16 for girls and 18 for boys.

Yesterday, two young girls were given in marriage to two adults from a household whose woman had lately run away with the girl’s uncle. The court in Thatta district ordered the police to protect the youngsters.

According to the Sindh Child Marriage Restriction Act of 2013, the court directed the police to pursue legal action against the individuals forcing the girls into forced marriages.

In the Ferozwala neighborhood of Sheikhupura district, on April 9, a case was filed against persons who were accused of forcing an 11-year-old non-Muslim girl to convert to Islam and marry her.

Sara Ahmed, a member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly and the chairperson of the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (CPWB), forwarded the Child Marriage Bill to the Home Department’s secretary on April 25.

The measure states that 18 is the minimum age at which boys and girls may be married.
