Bob Dylan's masterwork in abstract art brings about $200K at auction

Bob Dylan, a rock and roll legend, recently sold his painting at an auction for about $200,000.

Dylan’s late 1960s abstract artwork went up for an incredible $196,156, according to a press statement from RR Auction, the auction company that handled the sale.

The artwork was created during Dylan’s time at Woodstock and corresponded with his work with The Band. The highly regarded CDs “The Basement Tapes” (1975) and “The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete” (2014) are the products of this era’s musical output.

The artwork, which has a bull outline in the center and interesting shapes, patterns, and identifiable iconography surrounding it, is described by RR Auction as a “colorful and energetic abstract composition.”

The abstract elements are interwoven with animal figurines, bowties, and musical notes. The most striking element is a red-outlined person wearing a hat with a brim, which is evocative of Dylan’s distinctive Woodstock look.

An additional element of suspense is added by the artwork’s backstory. Dylan exchanged the picture for an astrological chart from Sandy LePanto, a resident of Woodstock, according to the auction site. Recently, LePanto’s family found the artwork again in her ex-husband’s estate.

The auction description quotes Anne Margaret Daniel as saying, “Sandy was not only one of the most beautiful women in Woodstock at a time when there were many; she was a mystic, a channeler, a reader of stars, and maker of astrology charts for her friends.”

She had a keen interest in mythology and studied much and profoundly about the legends of many different nations. Sandy completed charts and readings for Dylan, and in return he gave her a painting.

Dylan has previously dabbled in the visual arts. His creative endeavors have appeared on record covers, such as “Music from Big Pink,” The Band’s 1968 debut, and “Self-Portrait,” his own 1970 double album.

“This vibrant piece that melds music, symbolism, and personal reflection demonstrates Dylan’s boundless artistry,” said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auction, in a statement.

“This sale highlights the enduring impact of his multifaceted talent as we approach his 83rd birthday.”

Dylan now travels with music icons Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, and John Mellencamp for the 2024 Outlaw Music Festival.
