Bushra Bibi to oppose designating Bani Gala house as a sub-jail

Bushra Bibi, the former first lady, has petitioned the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to be transferred to Adiala Jail from her Bani Gala mansion, challenging the authorities’ decision to deem it a sub-jail.

Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was imprisoned at her Islamabad apartment after an accountability court sentenced the couple to 14 years in imprisonment in the Toshakhana case.

At the request of the superintendent of Adiala jail, the Bani Gala mansion was designated as a “sub-jail” by the authorities in order to detain the former first lady.

The decision in the case pertaining to the unlawful sale of state gifts was made public by Judge Muhammad Bashir of the accountability court, who sentenced Bushra and Khan to 14 years in prison apiece.

The court fined the couple Rs 1.57 billion, or 787 million apiece, and also barred the former prime minister from holding public office for ten years.

As stated in the appeal today, Bushra Bibi is prepared and willing to spend her sentence in the “Ordinary Jail Premises at Adiala Jail, Adiala rather than the declared sub-jail at her residence,” in line with other party political activists.

The former first lady added that because of possible security risks, she does not feel secure being imprisoned on the sub-jail’s property alone.

“Although the petitioner is currently in good health, her sense of insecurity has been heightened by the movement of unidentified individuals in her home, which the government has declared to be a sub-jail.”

According to Bushra Bibi, the “special treatment” she received was discriminatory and went against the spirit of equality protected by the Constitution.

The petitioner begged the court to overturn the notice designating her residence as a sub-jail and transfer her to Adiala Jail in the “Interest of Justice” in light of the previously mentioned grounds.
