BRT Peshawar ticket increases are planned in an effort to “cut billions of rupees’ loss”

In an effort to rein in the billions of rupees that are lost annually, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is considering raising the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Peshawar fare, according to a report on Monday, citing sources.

According to official sources, BRT Peshawar has an annual loss of around Rs6 billion; thus, many measures, including an increase in the BRT fare, are being contemplated to mitigate the loss.

According to the sources, the provincial finance department has received a proposal from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority to raise the fare. They claimed that an extra Rs. 5 per passenger will bring in an additional Rs. 670 million in income. On the other hand, raising the price by Rs 10 might bring in an extra Rs1.36 billion in income.

They said that the subsidy is increased year even though the number of BRT users is increasing. The government treasury is providing a subsidy of Rs50 to each passenger, as they argued that while a passenger pays a fee of Rs28, the actual cost is Rs80.

The government sources state that BRT spends around Rs200 million a month for diesel and power. To prevent losses for the BRT, the finance department has asked the appropriate authorities for further options.

According to the sources, the caretaker administration received a suggestion to raise the BRT fare, but they decided to defer the decision to the elected government.

Advisor to KP Chief Minister for Finance Muzzammil Aslam said that raising BRT fares is unavoidable because to rising inflation. According to him, he has requested a plan to raise the BRT fare as minimally as feasible.

According to Aslam, TransPeshawar has been instructed to reduce BRT expenses. According to him, the business has also been instructed to evaluate contractor contracts.

TransPeshawar CEO Tariq Usman stated that the company’s inability to raise tariffs has resulted in a greater loss of BRT service. He said that although the cost of diesel and electricity has quadrupled over the past two years, the fee has not gone up.
