Pakistan Moves to Strengthen Digital Economy, IT, and Telecom Reforms
Islamabad – The government held a high-level session aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, promoting innovation, and attracting strategic investments to boost the country’s digital economy. The meeting also focused on advancing IT and telecom reforms to align with global best practices.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, senior officials from the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), and secretaries from the ministries of IT, commerce, privatisation, and law attended the session.
Discussions centered on enhancing national connectivity, creating a business-friendly environment, and improving strategies for IT and telecom reforms. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the urgency of unlocking Pakistan’s digital potential, stating that showcasing the country’s digital capabilities is crucial for sustainable economic growth.
Participants reviewed investment plans designed to encourage innovation and support digital transformation. The session also highlighted the importance of strong policies and inter-agency collaboration to boost technology exports, improve digital skills, advance IT and telecom reforms, and implement integrated e-governance solutions.
Earlier, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima announced that Pakistan’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy has been developed after extensive consultations. Speaking at an event in Islamabad, she said the government is now focused on implementing and executing the policy.
Shaza Fatima stressed the need to embrace emerging technologies to drive national progress. Currently, Pakistan does not have an AI-specific regulatory framework, though the ministry has introduced several initiatives, including laws, rules, and policies, to address potential challenges related to AI usage.
