Pakistan, Iran Vow to Deepen Literary Ties Through Translation and Cultural Collaboration

ISLAMABAD – In a major step towards enhancing cultural diplomacy, a high-level meeting between the Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) and Iranian officials explored new avenues for boosting literary cooperation between the two nations.

Majid Meshki, representing Iran, held in-depth discussions with PAL Chairperson Dr. Najeeba Arif and Director General Sultan Nasir. The talks focused on intensifying cultural exchange through reciprocal translation programs and joint literary initiatives.

During the meeting, Dr. Najeeba Arif highlighted PAL’s initiatives aimed at promoting Pakistani literature in regional languages, supporting writers’ welfare, and expanding literary publications. She underscored the enduring influence of Persian on Urdu literature, calling it a cornerstone of Pakistan’s literary heritage.

Meshki was introduced to key PAL publications, including Gulbang-e-Arzoo, a Persian poetry collection by Dr. Aslam Ansari, and a Persian translation of Kulliyat-e-Iqbal by Muhammad Afsar Rahbeen. The Iranian delegation expressed deep appreciation for these works and praised PAL for showcasing Pakistan’s rich literary traditions to the global audience.

Applauding PAL’s role, Meshki stated that “the academy is showcasing the beautiful literary face of Pakistan to the world.” He called for more collaborative translation efforts to make literary treasures accessible to broader audiences across both countries.

He also presented recent Urdu translations of Persian literature published by the Iranian Consulate, expressing Iran’s continued interest in future joint literary projects.

Both sides agreed to enhance mutual collaboration, including exchange visits by literary delegations and joint participation in artistic events. Dr. Najeeba Arif also invited Iranian authors to attend PAL’s international literary conference scheduled for 2026, a gesture warmly welcomed by Meshki.

The meeting concluded with a symbolic book exchange, reflecting a shared commitment to building lasting literary bridges between Pakistan and Iran.

This renewed partnership underscores the role of literary diplomacy in promoting mutual understanding and cultural unity in the region.
