Pakistan Aims for Local Vaccine Production, Pharma Industry Urged to Collaborate

Islamabad – A delegation from the Pakistan Pharma Manufacturing Association met with the Health Minister on Tuesday to discuss key developments in the country’s pharmaceutical sector. The meeting was also attended by the CEO of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and other senior officials.

The discussions focused on the implementation of 2D barcodes as part of efforts to eliminate counterfeit medicines from the market. Officials also explored strategies for boosting local vaccine production.

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal emphasized the government’s commitment to producing vaccines domestically. He called on DRAP and the pharmaceutical industry to create a coordinated roadmap that would make Pakistan self-reliant in this critical area, reducing dependence on imports.

“Local vaccine production will not only strengthen our healthcare system but also save valuable foreign exchange,” he said. The minister further encouraged measures to increase pharmaceutical exports.

The delegation praised recent reforms at DRAP, noting that the digitization of medical devices has significantly eased business operations for the industry.

In a related meeting, Secretary of the Board of Investment, Capt (Retd) Muhammad Mahmood, met the Health Minister to discuss investment opportunities in healthcare. Topics included public-private partnerships and initiatives to provide support and incentives to both local and foreign investors.
