Sarmad Khoosat wins the DC South Asian Film Festival

There are still presents in store for Pakistani filmmaker Sarmad Khoosat as 2023 comes to a conclusion. At the DC South Asian Film Festival, Khoosat won the Best Director prize for his 2022 film Kamli, which is set in the heart of the nation’s capital. The film fest, which presents the best new international alternative films from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and Sri Lanka, is a highly regarded yearly cultural event in Washington, D.C.

Khoosat announced his victory on Instagram by posting a photo of the trophy, which was also posted as an Instagram Story by Khoosat Films’ official account. Congratulations and well wishes were showered into the comments by admirers and celebrities, including Jawad Sharif, Tooba Siddiqui, and actress Sarwat Gillani. One of the main cast members of the movie, actor Omair Rana, also gave Khoosat admiration.

At the Minsk International Film Festival in November, Kamli made history by winning three esteemed awards. At the prestigious ListapadVeteran actor Sania Saeed, who plays Sakina in Kamli, a blind woman, won Best Actress at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF) earlier in Mississauga, Canada. Along with Nimra Bucha, Adeel Afzal, Iman Shahid, and Saba, Sania, and Omair, the film also marked the debut of Hamza Khawaja.

Zindagi Tamasha, directed by Khoosat, won numerous accolades and received widespread praise. It was Pakistan’s official submission for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best International Film category. Despite being approved by all three censor boards, the movie had trouble finding a local audience because to protests from religious organizations. As a result, on August 4, 2023, Khoosat eventually released the movie on video hosting platforms like Vimeo and YouTube.

festival, Belarus’s biggest film festival, Saba Qamar won Best Actor, Khoosat took home Best Director, and the movie won Viewers’ Choice. The filmmaker and Khoosat Films both hailed the victory on their official Instagram pages.
