Fresh Seafood from Pakistan Arrives in Urumqi, Boosting Regional Trade

Urumqi, Xinjiang — The first shipment of fresh seafood from Pakistan has arrived at Urumqi Tianshan International Airport, marking the reopening of the airport’s dedicated inspection site for imported aquatic products.

The shipment, weighing 1,292 kilograms, included popular varieties such as black pomfret, prawns, hairtail, and grouper. It was transported from Islamabad aboard China Southern Airlines flight CZ6008.

This milestone follows two months of careful coordination among importers, customs officials, and airport authorities to ensure smooth processing and delivery.

Previously, most seafood consumed in Xinjiang came from China’s coastal regions, which led to longer transit times and higher costs for consumers.

To speed up clearance, customs officers at Tianshan Airport worked closely with all parties involved, streamlining inspections and ensuring compliance, according to a report by China Economic Net on Friday.

Pakistan’s deep-sea fisheries are known for their high-quality seafood, which is gaining popularity among Chinese buyers. The reopening of Urumqi’s cold chain infrastructure is expected to strengthen regional trade links and improve access to fresh products.

Looking ahead, Xinjiang Airport Group plans to enhance its import capabilities by applying for official status to handle edible aquatic animals. With its broad flight network connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa, the airport aims to bring more fresh global products—such as cherries, lobsters, and salmon—directly to local consumers.

This development represents a significant step forward in expanding trade and delivering fresh, quality goods to the Xinjiang region.
