Pakistan Urges UN to Solve Kashmir Dispute
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar from Pakistan spoke at a press conference at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. He said that the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan must be solved because it is causing tensions and problems between the two countries.
He said, “Now is the time to deal with the Kashmir issue. This is not just Pakistan’s responsibility — we are only in the UN Security Council for two years as a temporary member. It is the duty of the Security Council, especially the permanent members, to take action and make sure their past decisions about Kashmir are followed.”
Earlier that day, the 15 members of the Security Council met and approved their agenda for July. Pakistan currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council.
Ambassador Iftikhar said, “Our approach is based on the UN Charter. We believe in solving problems peacefully, respecting all countries equally, following international law, and working together through multilateral efforts.”
He shared that Pakistan will organize two important meetings during July:
A high-level discussion on peace and security through peaceful solutions and cooperation, on July 22.
A meeting about UN and OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) cooperation, on July 24.
Both meetings will be led by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar. Dar will also lead another discussion on the situation in Palestine on July 23.
Ambassador Iftikhar said these discussions are important because many of today’s global problems are caused by unresolved issues and a lack of peaceful solutions.
Talking about Kashmir, he said the issue is still part of the UN Security Council’s agenda under the topic of India and Pakistan. He reminded reporters that the Security Council has passed several resolutions on Kashmir, including giving the people of Kashmir the right to choose their future.
He added, “Kashmir is a long-standing problem. It affects peace, politics, law, and human rights. It keeps India and Pakistan from having better relations. It’s time for the world to take this issue seriously and help solve it.”
