Government allows PDM protest but without any chaos

The government has decided to allow opposition parties to stage protest rallies anywhere in the country as long as they do not create chaos.

Prime Minister Imran Khan revealed the decision in a meeting with his top advisers on the changing political conditions in the country. Particular reference was the upcoming protests of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). PDM is a union of nearly a dozen political parties. These parties has been come together by the opposition to challenge the PTI-led government.

The prime minister said that peaceful protest is a democratic and constitutional right of every citizen. And his government would not deny the opposition parties this right. However, nobody would create chaos in the country under the mask of protest.

He further said that the opposition’s so-called movement is not for the people but instead it is the interest of the political elite who want to slide violently away from financial corruption charges. People have no interest in the “save corruption movement” of the opposition parties, he added.

The government political committee outlined its suggestions based on its assessment of the political situation in the country. There were common views among the participants on how to deal with the situation. They all agreed that the government would not interfere with the general meeting and general meeting of the PDM.

The committee also said that the opposition parties would have to ensure the action on health guidelines and SOPs that government has defined all across the country to stop the spread of coronavirus. And in case of any violation, government would take legal action.
