“Embrace”- Another Taste of Personal Poetry- Part II

Last time we discussed how 21st century poetry isn’t so bad and difficult to understand. In this post, I’m continuing the tradition by sharing another poem called “Embrace” that I wrote during the lock-down in 2020.

A Little Background

My university closed down temporarily from March 16, 2020. My friends and I have been separated since. Now, don’t get me wrong. We call and text. But, it’s just not the same. What is it about the physical presence of a person that makes us feel better? Well, for one thing, some of us are not good at texting. We can’t express ourselves completely via text. Anyhow, Science has provided many solutions and answers to many of our questions over the years. According to a few studies conducted during the lock-down, “our voices convey a myriad of emotions, which helps us understand one another better and feel more empathetic“.

Embrace It

Allah has given us all different skills and talents. Some are good with numbers while others are good with words. Additionally, some of us are athletic while some of us are studious. Although I enjoy playing badminton and tennis, you wouldn’t want me to be on your team. Trust me, I’m not exaggerating.

I think the biggest thing that people forget these days is that we are not perfect nor do we have to be. Honestly, I have never understood why people feel the need to achieve a certain level of perfection. Additionally, for poetry or any piece of writing, honest emotions is the only prerequisite. You don’t have to know about meter or rhythm. In fact, most people prefer free verse poems. So, I would say just grab a paper and a pencil. Then, write down what you feel. Finally, share it with trusted ones and friends. Here, I’m talking about people who would never ever judge or intentionally put you down.

Embrace

Happy Together
Sad Together
these simple remembrances
Were my everything

When will that day come?
When will we meet?
I want to see you so much
And tell you I missed you

Oh! How I missed you!
In memories that felt like a long time ago
echos that are so far away
We danced together, happily

When the snow melts
and the fog clears up
the second the rain stops
I will run to you

In my drenched clothes
my moist feet, slipping
on the icy sidewalk
Trying to get to you faster

And when we see each other
In such a long time
I won’t hold back
my damp body will embrace you
