Peshawar to Get 68 ‘Pink Buttons’ for Faster Police Response, Punjab Expands Panic Button Program
PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police are set to install 68 “Pink Buttons” across Peshawar in a bid to improve public safety, officials said. The system, while primarily aimed at protecting women, will be available to any citizen requiring urgent police assistance.
According to the Central Police Office KP, these emergency buttons will be strategically placed in women’s markets, shopping centers, and near educational institutions to enhance safety in public spaces.
Police officials explained that once a Pink Button is pressed, it immediately transmits video and audio feeds to the Police Control Room, allowing rapid deployment of police teams. Authorities believe the initiative will be a critical tool in preventing harassment and responding swiftly to emergencies.
Meanwhile, similar steps are underway in Punjab, where the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has begun installing panic buttons in women’s colleges and universities across Lahore. Following directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, 39 institutions have already been equipped in the first phase, with plans to expand to more than 450 colleges across the province.
The panic buttons are linked directly to the PSCA’s central control room. Alerts are sent to the Virtual Women Police Station when pressed, ensuring a prompt police response, even in situations where students cannot access their mobile phones.
The PSCA reported that panic buttons are already operational at 122 locations in Lahore and 101 in other cities. Expanding the system to educational institutions represents a significant step in strengthening public safety infrastructure in Punjab.
Officials said the technology-driven initiative is part of broader efforts to create a safer environment, giving students and citizens alike a reliable and fast way to seek help during emergencies.
