PM Shehbaz Urges FBR to Foster Business-Friendly Environment and Strengthen Tax Compliance
Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level session on reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), urging the institution to create a business-friendly environment and provide maximum support to taxpayers.
Highlighting the importance of regular taxpayers as the backbone of the nation’s economy, the prime minister directed the FBR to promptly finalize the Income Tax and Sales Taxpayers’ Directory, ensuring recognition for compliant taxpayers.
He stressed that acknowledging taxpayers while penalizing tax evaders would help broaden the tax base. The prime minister also emphasized the use of professional expertise to detect evasion and secure government revenue.
PM Shehbaz further called for a public awareness campaign to highlight government actions against tax evasion.
The session also addressed customs reforms, with the prime minister instructing the FBR to engage top international auditors for third-party reviews of mis-declaration and under-invoicing. He underscored that continuous third-party audits are essential to identify system weaknesses and improve overall processes.
During the briefing, officials informed the prime minister about ongoing efforts to identify tax evaders, complete the Taxpayers’ Directory, and increase revenue through super auditors. The meeting noted that the directory is progressing rapidly and that a scientific auditing system has been developed for customs oversight.
Officials also highlighted that super auditors have been appointed to conduct thorough reviews of customs clearance and the risk management system, to use audit findings to further strengthen the system.
The meeting was attended by federal ministers Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Dr. Musadik Masood Malik, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ali Pervez Malik, and senior officials from relevant institutions.
