PM Shehbaz, Chinese Premier Li Qiang Discuss Stronger Pakistan-China Ties in Beijing
Beijing: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Thursday, where both leaders celebrated the positive momentum in Pakistan-China relations.
During the cordial meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed heartfelt gratitude to China for its steadfast support for Pakistan’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and socio-economic growth. He also praised China’s remarkable transformation under President Xi Jinping, saying Pakistan hopes to emulate China’s success and strengthen a closer, shared-future partnership.
Shehbaz highlighted that the government’s ongoing reforms are showing promising results, attributing much of the progress to China’s strong backing. He further revealed Pakistan’s plan to issue Panda Bonds in the Chinese capital market soon.
On the economic front, the prime minister underscored the role of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, in driving Pakistan’s socio-economic development over the past decade. He emphasized the urgency of completing projects like ML-I, the KKH realignment, and operationalizing the Gwadar Port.
Both sides agreed to continue close cooperation on the next phase of CPEC 2.0, which will feature five new corridors. Shehbaz also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for President Xi’s global initiatives, including the Global Governance, Development, Security, and Civilization Initiatives.
Next year, both nations will mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. During the visit, the leaders attended a ceremony for the signing and sharing of multiple memorandums of understanding and agreements covering CPEC 2.0, science and technology, IT, media, agriculture, and more.
