Government Urges PTI Lawmakers to Stay in Parliament Amid Mass Resignations
Islamabad – The government has reportedly asked the Speaker of the National Assembly not to immediately accept the resignations of opposition lawmakers, as efforts continue to persuade Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members to remain active in the parliamentary system.
Sources say the government has reached out to PTI’s parliamentary leadership, urging them to reconsider their decision to step down from committees and maintain their roles in parliament. “The government has requested the opposition to fulfill its duties while staying in parliament and committees,” officials added.
Officials have also extended an invitation for renewed dialogue, emphasizing that political disputes can only be resolved through negotiations.
Earlier today, PTI Member of the National Assembly Ali Muhammad Khan resigned from the Standing Committee on Human Rights and the Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, following directives from the party’s founder, Imran Khan. In a similar move, MNA Adil Bazai stepped down from all parliamentary committees, including the Standing Committees on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, and Information Technology and Telecommunications. “I am resigning from all committees on the directives of the party’s founding chairman,” Bazai confirmed.
Additionally, PTI’s Junaid Akbar resigned as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, handing in his resignation to Aamir Dogar, the party’s Chief Whip in the National Assembly. Akbar also stepped down from the Energy Committee, again following instructions from Imran Khan.
PTI MNA Suhail Sultan has also resigned from his positions in the Standing Committees on Law & Justice, Water Resources, and SAFRON, sources confirmed.
The resignations highlight ongoing tensions between PTI and the government, while officials continue efforts to keep dialogue channels open.
