New Opposition Leader to Be Appointed After PTI Disqualifications

New Opposition Leader to Be Appointed Amid Major PTI Disqualifications and Committee Reshuffle

The Speaker of the National Assembly is expected to soon issue a formal notification for the appointment of a new Opposition Leader, following significant changes within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentary ranks.

Independent members allied with PTI will also be required to submit fresh nominations for the important roles of Parliamentary Leader and Deputy Parliamentary Leader, signaling a reshuffle in the party’s leadership structure.

In a major development, PTI leader Omar Ayub has been removed from both the Public Accounts Committee and the Finance Committee after his recent disqualification. The disqualification of seven PTI lawmakers has led to the cancellation of their memberships in 15 standing committees, impacting the party’s presence across parliamentary bodies.

Among notable committee changes, Sahibzada Hamid Raza has been stripped of his role as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Rights. Similarly, Zartaj Gul has been removed from the same committee. Additionally, Rai Hassan Nawaz has been relieved of his chairmanship of the Standing Committee on Railways.

This reshuffle follows a wave of disqualifications that has significantly altered PTI’s representation in parliament.

Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified several PTI lawmakers, including National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub and Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz. These disqualifications came after their convictions related to the May 9 riots cases.

The ECP issued notifications confirming these disqualifications under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, which bars individuals convicted in certain cases from holding parliamentary seats.

Other disqualified lawmakers include National Assembly members Zartaj Gul, Rai Haider Ali, Sahibzada Hamid Raza (also chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee), and Rai Hassan Nawaz.

Provincial Assembly members Ansar Iqbal, Junaid Afzal Sahi, and Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal have also been disqualified following notifications from the ECP.

These decisions followed sentences handed down by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad, where PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Zartaj Gul, and Shibli Faraz were sentenced to 10 years in prison for their alleged involvement in the May 9 riots.

Meanwhile, some former PTI leaders such as Fawad Chaudhry, Zain Qureshi, and Khayal Kastro were acquitted in these cases.

In related developments, MPA Junaid Afzal Sahi was sentenced to three years in prison, while Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Rai Hassan Nawaz, and several others received 10-year sentences.

This wave of disqualifications and reshuffling marks a significant shift in PTI’s political and parliamentary standing as the party reorganizes its leadership and committee roles.
